Summary of the Explosion at Qatar's Ras Laffan Gas Plant

An industrial accident at the Barzan unit of the Ras Laffan Industrial City in Qatar has resulted in mass fatalities, as reported by the Qatari government on Monday. QatarEnergy confirmed via social media that an "operational incident" led to an explosion late on Sunday. Emergency response teams were immediately deployed and successfully brought the fire under control.

The Ministry of Interior announced that the accident, caused by a technical malfunction during operations, resulted in 13 deaths and 66 injuries among people of various nationalities. QatarEnergy specified that the deceased are of Indian and Pakistani nationalities, while the injured include individuals from Qatar, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania, Nigeria, and Nepal. The Barzan unit is used for local gas needs.

The government reported no leaks from the accident site, and search and rescue operations are complete. The injured are receiving medical treatment, and an investigation into the cause of the explosion is underway. QatarEnergy stated it will continue to communicate available information.

Ras Laffan Industrial City, the world's largest LNG export facility, is the center of Qatar's natural gas processing industry. The LNG processing center had been largely shuttered since Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz in response to a February 28 military attack on Iran by Israel and the US. QatarEnergy clarified that the Barzan unit was deliberately taken offline in December for urgent maintenance and was brought back online two days before the accident. The company is assessing the impact on other operations but has determined that LNG export capacity was not affected.
